Growing in your relationship with God is the most meaningful thing you can do. As a new Christian, however, it can seem overwhelming at first. In this article, we will discuss three of the best ways to grow closer to God and strengthen your relationship with Him.
One of the most fundamental aspects of strengthening your relationship with God is joining a local church. Hearing sermons, meditating on the deep truths of God, and applying what you learn will help you draw closer to God. Worshiping and praising the Most High invites the believer into a deep experience with the Holy Spirit, who is the Person of God living inside of us.
Second, fellowship and discipleship with other Christians is also beneficial in growing spiritually. Sociologically, this is partly due to something called the “social proximity effect,” among other factors. As humans, we often imitate the habits and behaviors of those we spend time around. According to riskology.co, “You’ll mirror the habits of the people you spend the most time with.” To build good habits, spend more time with people who already practice them. When I was a new Christian myself, I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful support system of believers to help along the way. Having a support system is a fantastic way to practice accountability in the essential areas of repentance, prayer, reading the Bible, and temptation avoidance.
Third, the more time you spend in the Word and in prayer, the stronger your relationship with God will be. A vital part of every relationship is communication. Just like in earthly relationships, the more you talk to someone, the stronger that relationship tends to be. The same principle applies to our Father. Praying is one of the most fulfilling things a Christian can do, and the main benefit is a stronger personal relationship with the Father. Remember, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7). Pray without ceasing; learn not only how to talk to God but also how to listen to him. In doing so you’ll see just how quickly your relationship with Him will flourish.
Humans were made to obey God, love him, and enjoy his creation forever. In order to do this as Christians, we must grow and strengthen our relationship with God. Hopefully, this article has helped give you direction in this area. Make sure to spend time with the right people who will help your spiritual walk. Pray always, and allow the Bible to guide your steps. Never forget that God loves you and has an incredible plan for your life!
